Mauritius - The Album
How is it November already?! That seems to be the question on most British peoples lips this morning as the streets are littered with children recovering from their halloween sugar hangovers!
Last week we decided on a real last-minute get away to Mauritius with Chris' Parents for a week in the sun before the temperatures turned really cold back home! The latter part of October is a lovely time to visit Mauritius, it's the start of their summer so temperatures remain blissful in the high 20s pushing the 30s on occasion that the sea breeze isn't blowing. We've already posted most of our Mauritius photos on Instagram however we thought (mainly for ourselves...selfish as we are!) to put this blog post together of all our photos so we have them in one place! An online photo album if you will to look back on when the rain really sets in back home!
So without further adeiu, here's everything about our week on the beautiful island of Mauritius! Our hotel was located in the beach resort town of Flic En Flac on the South West Coast of Mauritius, perfect for sunset beach walks and lazy strolls into town for dinner!
We arrived into Mauritius at about 7am local time, so our first day was mainly spent recovering from the night flight - snoozing in our room once checked in and lounging (snoring) by the pool.
On the second morning we were right as rain again so we took out this little Hobie Cat for a sail! Eve spent a lot of her childhood on the family boat sailing along the south coast of England and around the Channel Islands so she was keen to exercise those skills! There's a sense of freedom and accomplishment when it's just you on the water without an engine and you're managing to pick up quite a speed across the water! Fortunately for us it went without incident, which can't be said for another couple the following day who managed to capsize their catamaran! The next day we decided that the four of us would rent a car and head out to explore the Island starting with the capital city of Port Louis. Walking through the shopping streets by the Marina Quay we came across this unexpected and amazing umbrella covered street, lined with food and Henna Tattoo stalls and filled with all the designer shops you could imagine! Eve & Chris' Mum both got a Henna Tattoo on their hands before we strolled around taking it all in.
After stopping for lunch on the water front we then headed deeper into the Island to see a couple of the waterfalls. Mauritius has quite a few waterfalls so we visited the two that gave us a route back towards our beach front hotel. The tall waterfalls is Chamarel Falls and the Rockier cascade is Alexandra Falls.
These HUGE fruit bats often made an appearance on our travels, we found this one amongst some friends sleeping on the power lines! We could actually get quite close to see the colour of their fur and get a decent snap!
We took a couple of Boat trips out during our week, the first was a glass bottom boat and the second was to see if we could spot a pod of Dolphins. The sea was a bit choppy so we didn't manage to get any photos of the Dolphins... we did manage to capture them on video for our Travel vlog on YouTube so make sure to check that out if you want to see them!
As well as having a beautiful infinity pool our hotel package included free use of the water sports equipment which allowed us Chris & his Dad to head out on the Stand Up Paddle Boards but also gave Eve the chance to have a go for the first time... Chris' Dad fell off his board 3 times and Eve managed to stand up almost straight away and not fall off once!!
On one of our relaxing days away from activities or adventures, we decided to go for a swim when a star fish sidled over to us and tried to work its way over Chris' foot! We managed to delicately pick it up after checking it was safe to. Google told us that as long as it wasn't lodged onto any rocks and we keep it partially submerged in water then it was perfectly find to handle them gently.
The area we stayed in is often used for weddings, so on many of the days we were there the hotel was decorated with flowers from the night before!
In the evenings we walked into the local town to eat in the restaurants as it was either a 40 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi ride for 200 Mauritius Rupees (approx £4). This gave us the perfect opportunity to enjoy the Indian Ocean sunsets every evening and take hundreds of photos of the incredible red skies! We also couldn't resist a sunset reflection shot using the infinity pool!
So that's our Mauritius Album complete. It's actually the first time we've been away since our African Safari/Beach Honeymoon and it was the perfect week to relax before the busy Christmas season! Do let us know if you've got any trips planned or you've discovered somewhere you think we should definitely visit in the comments sections below! x
